Hi. My name is Jenny – and I do NOT run. Have always hated it. It was the number one reason I hated soccer as a kid (we had to run laps at practice). I am registered for two (not one, but TWO) 5K’s this summer. WHAT?! WHY???
Well, my mom and sister talked me into it. My mom did the Tri for a Cure Triathlon last July (she did incredible!) This year, my sister decided to do it with her. And they both said I should do it too. I said no the first three times they asked about it, but then decided it was worth a shot. We are splitting the triathlon into three portions, and participating as a team. We also have other members of our team. So, technically there are three separate teams, but we are all in it together.
Team #1
Swim: Cindy (my mom) – Captain
Bike: Larissa (my sister’s friend)
Run: Jackie (my cousin)
Team #2
Swim: Megan (my aunt)
Bike: Katelynn (my sister) – Captain
Run: Katelynn (yeah – she is doing BOTH bike & run portions! ROCKSTAR!)
Team #3:
Swim: Nicole (Kim’s friend)
Bike: Kim (Captain)
Run: ME! (ohmyGod.)
So, here I go! Somehow, between now and June, I need to figure out how to run. The problem is, not only do I not run (at all), but I am also terribly out of shape. I am the type of person that starts to “workout” (videos at home), and I will do it for a week and then go back to my usual routine of nothing.
I have always secretly wanted to be that girl that loves to run, I just don’t see that happening for me. But I am going to give it a try. I am going to train using the Couch to 5K program. I also heard about a great class at Messalonskee High School that will take you through the Couch to 5K program, and then they have a 5K at the end. That program starts in April and ends in June, which is perfect because the first 5K I am registered for (Twilight 5K) is on June 13th. The Tri for a Cure is on July 21st.
Here is my tentative timeline to make this happen:
March 8th (today): Out of shape, have never run a mile in my life.
April 8th: 5k for Newbies class begins (meets every Monday night for 10 weeks)
June 10th: 5k for Newbies class ends
June 13th: Twilight 5K Race at SMCC in Portland – 7PM
July 21st: Tri for a Cure Triathlon – SMCC 8AM
What do you think? Am I as crazy as I feel? There are many reasons I caved and finally said “yes” to this. First, it is on my bucket list! Second, I want to give running a chance (I am hoping I end up liking running somewhat in the end!) Third, if I can just accomplish this, I will have succeeded.I can already tell you I am not going to have a brag-worthy finish time. I mean, I am obviously going to do the best that I can, but what I am saying is that if I can just finish a 5K – that will be a huge accomplishment for me!
Wish me luck, and stay tuned!!! If you want to join me in my Couch to 5K journey, please do! You can sign up for the 5k for Newbies class that I am doing at http://www.kennebecvalleycoaching.com (it’s $49 if you sign up by March 21st, and meets every Monday from 6-7 PM from April 8th to June 10th).
If you want to sign up for the Twilight 5K, join our team (Cayers for a Cure) by clicking HERE. Participants in the Twilight 5K are asked to raise $100 (unless you are a participant in the Tri for a Cure, then your fundraising minimum is waived).
Finally, if you would like to support me in my journey, I am raising money for the Triathalon! Each participant is asked to raise $350, and I would be so appreciative of your donation! All donations are tax deductible and go directly towards the American Cancer Society.
If you would like to donate, you can do that right on my Tri for a Cure fundraising page (Click HERE!) Just be aware – for some reason, when you make a donation on the web, they will not take any amount less than $20.00. If you want to donate an amount less than that, you can just send me a check and I will pool all cash/check donations together to donate that way. Just email me at AuntieBling@ymail.com if you want to know my address. Every little bit helps! $1.00, $3.00, $5.00, whatever you can do! Your support means the world to me.
Stay tuned, I will post updates on my journey along the way, and a photo on race day!
(wish me luck!)
- Jenny
OH – PS! Another reason I said yes – I found a pair of Tiffany Nike Sneakers on Pinterest, and have decided that they would be my reward if I can get through the 5K for Newbies course (so I have a spiffy pair of sneaks for the big races!) Take a peek:

My prize for completing Couch to 5K training!
